The CDCN's new advisory council provides experience and expertise in a wide range of fields and backgrounds. This depth and breadth of collective knowledge has already made their guidance and consultation invaluable in the short time since the council has been founded in 2016.
Here are those who give their time and know-how to improving the CDCN and fighting Castleman's!
Arthur Rubenstein, MBBcH, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in the division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism and Dean Emeritus/Former EVP of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. An internationally renowned endocrinologist, Dr. Rubenstein was part of a research team that uncovered the link between a genetic mutation in insulin causing a form of diabetes. After leading the University of Pennsylvania Health System for over 10 years, he stepped down in 2011 and served as the Interim Director of the Penn Center for Orphan Disease Research & Therapy. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
Marc Brownstein, President and CEO of the Brownstein Group, has been involved and interested in advertising since he was a child. A Pennsylvania State graduate he started as a copywriter in New York, before returning to Philadelphia to join, and later run the Brownstein Group. Outside of the Agency, he is an active member of the board of directors of the Young Presidents Organization, Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, The Satell Institute for Corporate Social Responsibility, chairs the Arts & Business Council of Philadelphia, and is involved in many more organizations beyond.
Marjorie Raines, former Executive Vice-President and Chief Investment Officer at The Chubb Corp., has since been an investment consultant to RWJBarnabas Health Hospitals, on the board of directors of the Navigators Group, the Vardana Fund Ltd. and Healthpoint LLC. She has also been on the advisory board of the Jr. League of Miami and the Special Committee Advisor to the Miami March of Dimes. In 2015, Marjorie joined Florida's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Foundations' Board of Directors and is currently chairing the Finance Committee.
Dr. Louis Matis, Senior Vice-President and CDO at Pieris Pharmaceuticals, has served as Executive Director of strategic evaluation and CSO at Alexion Pharmaceuticals, where he had a leading role in developing the first-in-class complement inhibitor monoclonal antibody (eculizumab). He has been CEO at CGI Pharmaceuticals and the Immune Tolerance Institute. Prior to that he held senior positions at the National Cancer Institute, NIH and FDA Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.
Bernie A. Prazenica, President and GM of WPVI-TV/6abc Philadelphia, has had a long career in TV, starting as Account Executive at WPTT-TV in Pittsburgh, on to Richmond's WXEX-TV, and finally WPVI-TV and ABC in Philadelphia. He currently serves on many boards including, Chairman of The Police Athletic League, Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters, The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Corporate Council, Philadelphia Zoo’s Chairman’s Council, and many more.
Ryan Hummel is a Senior Director at Vynamic, the largest all healthcare management consulting firm in Philadelphia. He’s worked in the Philadelphia healthcare industry for over 15 years and has held leadership and administrative roles with The American Red Cross, Walgreens, and Abington Health System. He is an avid wellness junkie who has participated in triathlons across the region. He currently serves as the Chair of the Advisory Council to cure Castleman Disease and also works as a mentor in the Philadelphia Futures “Sponsor-A-Scholar (SAS) Program”. As the Chair of this incredible group, he hopes to centralize and harness all of the incredible ideas and extraordinary talent that exists on the council into a clear and concise message that will help translate awareness into the needed donations that are vital to find a cure for this deadly disease.
